GIGS 2011

Tuesday 6th December 2011

The Rowbarge, Guildford, GU1 1LW)

Vic's Buskers open-mic hosted by Vic Cracknell

Apart from murdering Jackson Browne's "I'm Alive (but hey it was worth it just to be able to write that sentence) I felt my set went well.

My faith in You've Got The Magic Back has been somewhat restored. I tell you there can be few better feelings than seeing people in an audience seemingly finding something you've written interesting and enjoyable. I'm coming to the conclusion that you just can't judge (I can't at least) how songs will be received. You've just got to zone into the moment and try and "frame" the songs for that particular audience the best way you can in order that the songs might be received in the best possible light. Perhaps the "visual art" and "framing" analogy is quite a good one actually. Of course I could be talking complete b***cks (many say that's not unusual) but I didn't expect to find this performance thing so interesting.

The Rowbarge was the busiest I'd seen in my three visits there and there was a great atmosphere. Once again there were many great performers. I'm reluctant to highlight anybody but I did like the set from Em and Guy Heape who constitute Vernon's Friends. I'm impressed with the sounds Em gets out of her Roland Juno keyboard and for me the interplay with Guy's guitar really works. And of course, the thing that always tips it, is that they write their own distinctive material. Jackson Browne by the way was included in my set tonight just by way of "end of year" thanks to the great service Vic Cracknell provides to local musician s (I had discovered the previous Thursday that he is also a fan). The song actually fitted in with the rest of my set and was "on-topic" as I discovered Jackson Browne and in particular "I'm Alive" around the time I wrote Cold Heart.

Finally, it has to be said I'm sorry to see Juliet and Rob Osborne leave to go to pastures new. I don't know them well but they seem like nice people. All that remains is to wish them well in their new adventures.

Don't forget the gig on the 14th - latest details can be found here.
